By writing this post, I am really throwing myself to the wolves. What I mean is, I’m sharing some info that may or may not make you think I’m a little bonkers.
This post is about getting your vegetable garden ready and planting your crops according to the phases of the moon. Yes, I plant my vegetables according to the moon.
And yes, I live in a little neighborhood but pretend like I live on a farm. (We also have a chicken coop and ten chickens in our backyard.)
That may sound a little strange, but it is so fun! I love my tiny, metropolitan farm life. 🙂
So for you fellow gardeners out there, here is some information that you may find helpful.
First off, I wrote a post last year, Vegetable Gardening According To The Moon, that explains the science behind gardening in line with the phases of the moon. It’s a really neat, really old way of doing things.
And it works.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again…I was picking tomatoes well into January. I’m telling you, there’s something to be said for this moon gardening stuff. 🙂
So check out the history behind it and if you’re convinced it’s worth a try, here are some dates to get you started.
2014 Moon Gardening Calendar
- For the next week (August 4-7) you should be cultivating your area: tilling, fertilizing, weeding, etc. Keep in mind that your garden needs to be in a spot that receives at least 7 hours of sunlight a day.
- August 8-9: The best days for the month of August for planting above-ground crops, especially peas, beans, cucumbers, and squash. You can also plant your seedbeds and flower gardens. (This information is dictated by individual climates. Down here in Alabama, August 8 and 9 should be perfectly fine for planting.)
For a more detailed gardening calendar, you need to consult a handy dandy Grier’s Almanac. These can be purchased online or found at most feed and supply stores.
The great thing about planting dates according to the moon is that every month you get a fresh set of opportunities. If you miss this month’s optimum planting dates, then September will offer new ones.
I have my plot tilled and fertilized. So come August 8 and 9, I will be ready with my crops! I plan to grow tomatoes, peppers, pumpkins, zucchini, and herbs. Before starting, contact experts like a landscape design or tree care service to get your garden ready for planting. If you’re having problems with your garden’s or farm’s landscaping, you can hire a Commercial Dump Truck service.
I would love to hear from you! Have you ever tried this method of gardening before? Has it worked for you? Share you gardening experiences!
Happy Planting!

You really make it appear so easy with your presentation but I to find this matter to
be actually something that I think I’d never understand.
It sort of feels too complex and extremely extensive for me.
I’m having a look ahead for your subsequent put up,
I’ll try to get the dangle of it!

I also plant with the moon using the Grier’s Almanac, and have great results!
I was wondering if you could describe a seedbed. Is it just when you start the seeds in a container, or should you start the seeds directly in the ground?
