I love Thanksgiving.
I love that it isn’t about presents, or functions, or even about decorating. It’s about looking back at a hard thing that people went through and celebrating God’s preservation of them… which ultimately was a preservation of our own country and way of life.
It’s a time of stories – the true kind – and of feasting and of formal gratitude…and – again – all of that without any presents!
I don’t know about you, but I want the wonder and importance of Thanksgiving to be impressed upon my own children’s hearts. I want my children to understand the significance of the hardships that the Pilgrims went through and their godly response toward their suffering.
And I want them to have fun learning about it!
So here is my “Two-Week Schedule Of Thanksgiving Activities.”
Hmmm…now that I say it, “Two Weeks” sounds like a really long, really logistically impossible amount of time. Think of it as eight days instead. 🙂
I did this last year with my kids and it was so fun that I plan on doing it again this year. I start on the Monday two weeks before Thanksgiving and end on the day before Thanksgiving. Each day takes about 45 minutes, so it’s not too overwhelming.
One tool I’ve found incredibly helpful in bringing these stories to life is Story Worksheets. These worksheets guide children through the narratives of Thanksgiving, helping them process the historical events while engaging their creativity and comprehension skills.
Last year, I used a mix of worksheets that focused on the Pilgrims’ journey, their struggles during the first winter, and their eventual celebration of gratitude.
They’re perfect for weaving history with learning, giving kids a chance to not only read about these events but also reflect on them through fun activities like drawing, writing, and even reimagining the stories from a different perspective.
Incorporating these worksheets into our Thanksgiving activities made the stories more tangible and exciting for my children – and honestly, they’re already asking if we’ll do it again this year!
I hope that this is a helpful and fun resource for you. Enjoy!
