We have reached the end of our journey. Eight days of stories, crafts, and games with your children…all centered around the provision and protection of God. I hope you have enjoyed this time as much as I have. 🙂
So as I brought my boys in for school time, I let them know how proud I am of them. They have worked so hard over the last two weeks, and have learned so much!
I asked them what their favorites have been so far…favorite book page they made, favorite part of the story, and favorite game we have played.
We read our story one last time…that great, simplified version of the First Thanksgiving. They enjoy this story so much, and I love when they jump in and finish a part of the story for me.
From story time, we moved on to their Thankfulness Tree. The final leaves are on, and the tree is complete! The tree looks very full and happy. 🙂
Next, it was time to complete the final page in their “My Thanksgiving Book.” I brought out all of the pages that they have already made, and we looked through them. They were so proud! After today’s page dries, I will bind the book together with some ribbon and display it!
Today’s page featured a construction paper plate with pasted-on food. Lovely!
As they worked on assembling their paper feast, we talked about the Pilgrims and their Day of Thanks. Why did they have this big dinner with all of their friends, family, and the Indians? Why do we have a Thanksgiving meal every year?
We talked about the amazing way that God has taken such good care of us, and for all of His children that have ever lived.
Once they finished their page, I told them that today’s game was all about making their very own plate of Thanksgiving food!
For my set-up, I had taped several food words onto an empty plate:
- Turkey
- Fish
- Beans
- Roll
- Pie
I had my boys sit on a towel, and I handed them each some blobs of Play-Doh in a variety of colors. I told them that they were in charge of making food to put on the Thanksgiving plate.
First, they had to make some turkey. After they made their funny little version of some Play-Doh turkey, I showed Rudy the plate with all of the words on it.
“Which one of these words says ‘beans’? B-b-b-beans.” He looked for the letter that makes the ‘b’ sound, which led him to the word ‘beans’!
After he plopped his Play-Doh beans onto the correct word, I then told him to make a roll. We went through all of words, until the plate was filled with non-edible food!
Since Mark isn’t quite there yet, he was in charge of making whatever in the world he wanted to make with his Play-Doh. 🙂
I think the smorgasbord came out quite nice… 🙂
Well, that ends our Thanksgiving Lessons series. It’s a little bittersweet…for next week we go back to our usual school routine, but I am looking forward to the rest of the week off.
Enjoy your Thanksgiving. I know that I’ll be thinking about the lives and character of the Pilgrims…and I’m sure my boys will be thinking about all the adventures the Pilgrims had, as well. 🙂
