Thanksgiving Lessons for Homeschoolers: Day Four

Day five!  We are really moving along!

After asking Rudy what his favorite Thanksgiving activity has been so far, he told me that he weally weally liked pouring all of the seeds into the jar.  🙂  (Day four’s activity)

However, knowing my Rudy’s love for all things construction, I have a feeling that after completing today’s activity (building a log cabin!) he might have a different answer to that question.

We started out with the usual routine…

  1. We read the first Thanksgiving story – By now I’m definitely getting better and better at reading the story with fun voices and sound effects
  2. We added new leaves to our Thankfulness tree – Today, they were thankful for toys and Mommy!  That’s always a fun one to hear.  🙂Thanksgiving Lessons for Homeschoolers: Day Five
  3. And we completed the next page in our “My Thanksgiving Book” – Today they glued together pieces of construction paper to make a log cabin.

I thought this was an interesting take on a log cabin. 🙂

The boys both knew that after completing their more calm, school-y tasks that it was time for a fun game!  Well, today’s game I was very excited about…for we would be building log cabins!

To construct a miniature log cabin, all we used was a square of floral foam, a whole bunch of twigs, and a small square of cardboard for the roof.

I laid all of the supplies out in front of the boys and told them that we were going to build a log cabin just like the Pilgrims lived in.  I showed them how to stand up the twigs in the floral foam.

They worked so hard building “walls” with little twigs.

This log cabin may be a little rickety, but the boys sure are proud of what they built!

They built walls, left a gap for a door, and then glued the cardboard roof on top!  This was such a perfect activity for my two boys.

The Thanksgiving story is truly coming to life for Rudy and Mark.  All of the elements of the story have been made tangible for them through crafts and games.

What a sweet time with them!  🙂
